Fairtrade guarantees a fair deal for growers and their families in developing countries. You can make a big difference to people's lives by just going shopping. For every pound we give to poor countries in aid, two pounds are lost because of unfair trade. Fairtrade starts to put that right and it doesn't rely on charity.

Here's how you and the 15,000 people of Aberystwyth and District can make a difference. We spend over £2 million per year (over £3 per person each week) on the four most readily available Fairtrade products - tea, coffee, chocolate and bananas.

If the whole of Aberystwyth and District brought Fairtrade, tea, coffee, chocolate and bananas this would mean an extra £150,000 a year to lift thousands of producers out of dire poverty. And it's not just money. Fairtrade builds wells for fresh water, gets children to schools, ensures good working conditions, protects the environment and builds sustainable communities.

Many cities, towns and areas in Wales including Ammonford, Cardiff, Criccieth and Wrexham are becoming Fairtrade zones in order that as many people as possible have the opportunity to act on world poverty in this realistic way.

Fairtrade is growing fast increasing by over 50% every year. On price, Fairtrade products have to be compared with the best. Tea, coffee and chocolate are no more exspensive and sometimes cheaper. Bananas do cost more, but if you saw the difference between a small Fairtrade farm and a pesticide soaked plantation with workers on starvation wages, you would be glad tp pay the difference.

You'll find Fairtrade products displaying the FAIRTRADE mark at the Co-op (Waun Fawr and Penparcau), in Somerfields and Safeway/Morrison supermarkets and several other outlets in Aberystwyth including the Wholefood Shop, Treehouse and Oxfam.
