IGER takes centre court by storm
One could be forgiven for thinking that Iger is the surname of a Scandinavian tennis player vying for the final at this week's Wimbledon tennis tournament. But IGER, - the Aberystwyth based Institute of Grassland and Environmental Research is certainly a "top seed" when it comes to taking centre stage at the home of tennis.
The hard-wearing turf that provides the playing surface at the All England Tennis Club's courts is grown from seeds developed at IGER in Aberystwyth.
Dr. Daniel Thorogood is the scientist responsible for the tough grass mixture.
"I have the greatest of admiration for the skills displayed by the world's top players, but I am also proud of the fact that we at IGER have provided the stage for them to display their skills to their best advantage, and skills which are admired by tennis aficionados the world over".
The Aberystwyth research institute was commissioned many years ago to develop a hard-wearing staygreen grass by British Seed Houses Ltd, in the only UK based grass breeding programme.
"They were looking for a grass seed variety that was both hard wearing but which was capable of being mown extremely short. The Sports Turf Research Institute, based in Yorkshire, made independent tests of one hundred and fifty varieties or so from all over the world, and AberElf and AberImp developed by IGER came out on top".
The two ryegrass varieties developed in the late 1980s and used at Wimbledon for the last eight years or so, were then blended together in a 50/50 mix to make a Wimbledon lawn capable of withstanding the pounding that a tennis court invariably takes.
The red fescue grass previously used would result in brown areas on the court after a while, but the grasses developed at Aberystwyth ensure that the courts are looking better at the end of Wimbledon fortnight.
Game, set and match to IGER it seems!
