IGER is the major publicly funded centre in the UK for research into grassland agriculture and agriculture/environmental relationships. The Institute is grant aided by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC). IGER was formed in 1990 by the amalgamation of the Welsh Plant Breeding Station, founded in Aberystwyth in 1919, and the Grassland Research Institute, founded in 1949 in Hurley, Berkshire.

Environmental Research

IGER's mission is to undertake a programme of basic, strategic and applied grassland based research aimed at enhancing efficiency, improving sustainability, reducing adverse environmental impacts and placing emphasis on adaptation to changing economic influences. It is also our mission to disseminate the results of such research in order to sustain the effectiveness and improve the environmental performance of grassland related agriculture.

IGER is unique in combining together in one institute research on breeding new varieties of grasses and clovers, including new genotypes with enhanced forage quality characteristics, with research on feeding dairy and beef cattle and sheep which allows the nutritional value of such new varieties to be tested. Work in these applied science areas is underpinned by basic plant and microbial science research aimed at understanding physiological mechanisms involved, for example in plant nutrition, crop quality and pest and stress resistances, and at developing new molecular technologies which will underpin future plant breeding work. Agricultural systems research is also an important research area encompassing sustainable management systems, soil nutrient studies, farm wastes management and agro-ecology.

From April 2008, IGER-Wales, its staff and funding from the Biotechnology and Biological Research Council will be transferred to the University of Wales Aberystwyth. The new partnership will form part of a new research centre for international scientific excellence and knowledge transfer related to land-based research.

Profitable Farming with a Greener Future
Breeding programmes of forage grasses and clovers at IBERS are focused on the need to increase the efficiency of grassland agriculture. The main exhibit at Grassland and Muck 2008 will look at ‘Food and Fuel’ and show grassland farmers that livestock farming and growing crops for biofuel can co-exist and provide them with an extra source of revenue.

Cellulosic Ethanol To Replace Petrochemical Fuels In Next Ten Years
The humble perennial ryegrass is seen as the unlikely champion of 4 x 4 owners on the school-run as they wave goodbye to Ken Livingstone's congestion charges, whilst the much-maligned owners of "Chelsea tractors" could soon be laughing all the way to the bank if research currently undertaken at a Welsh research station fulfils its full potential.

Lord Milford Debate To Focus On Climate Change
It is becoming more generally accepted that human-induced climate change is already happening. People, particularly in those places where the climate is already at its most extreme, struggle with the impacts of global warming every day, and its observed effects are becoming increasingly and rapidly obvious to us all.

Ecological Research Help Grassland Farmers Improve Their Yields
A hot topic in ecology in the last few years has been the extent to which plant biomass production in an ecosystem depends on species diversity. Most research on this topic has been carried out by ecologists in relatively species-rich environments and the general conclusion has been that ecosystem biomass production is less effective when species diversity declines.
