IGER Achievements Recognised by Royal Agricultural Society of England
IGER Plant Breeding Aberystwyth is a recipient of the Royal Agricultural Society of England Technology Award 2007.
The award is made to "an individual or team who has applied a scientific advance to develop a technology through the creation or development of a product or process. The product or process will have been introduced into the market and provide demonstrable improvements for farmers in any aspect of practical agriculture and land management"
The 'IGER Plant Breeding' nomination was based on the development of innovative grass, clover and oat/cereal varieties that have had a significant impact in the market and on end use over the last 20 years. The successful varieties produced illustrate the potential of genetic improvement, using advanced scientific approaches, to support multifunctional land-use and alleviate environmental impacts. The approaches developed can be deployed rapidly to cope with future problems such as those associated with climate change.

Prof. Mervyn Humphreys, Director of IGER Aberystwyth said:
"This prestigious award is significant recognition of the contribution that 'IGER Plant Breeding' has made to the agricultural industry and I heartily congratulate all concerned with this major long-term achievement."
"Farmers particularly in the West of the UK have benefited immensely over many years from the sterling research work that has revolutionised grassland farming, and improved the economic viability of their holdings. IGER's efforts in plant breeding have also benefited a range of UK based seed and other industries."
On behalf of RASE, Humphrey Salwey, chairman of the awards committee said:
"For many years IGER has championed plant genetics and the development of innovative grasses, clover and oat varieties that have entered the market. IGER's focus currently is on breeding programmes to reduce the environmental footprint of UK agriculture. Their work has demonstrated the potential of genetic improvement, using advanced scientific approaches to support multifunctional land use and alleviate environmental impact."
In congratulating the award winners Professor John Moverley, RASE Chief Executive added:
"The society believes that the impact of sustainable energy and environmental change must be carefully balanced with the requirements of food production. These outstanding scientists will help steer agriculture as these needs gain prominence."
Based in Wales, IGER has worldwide importance as a leading research institution for grassland based land-use and environmental issues" added Prof. Humphreys.
"IGER has developed a very strong branded reputation based on excellence, quality and innovation. The research is ongoing and IGER scientists are facing new challenges of climate change allied to agricultural sustainability."
The award will be presented at a special dinner at the Royal Show on July 2 2007 where Dr. John Valentine will be present to receive it on behalf of 'IGER Plant Breeding.'
