Scientist With Roots In Farming
David Davies, who combines a career at IGER with tending to his 60 acre holding in the Cambrian Mountains has been appointed Agriculture Outreach Manager for the Aberystwyth based Research Institute soon to merge into Aberystwyth University.
Dr. Davies's role will be pivotal in projecting a consistent and positive view of the Institute's activities to the farming community, developing and co-ordinating further initiatives through direct interaction with farmers and via key partner organisations and stakeholders.
Dave was brought up on a family farm in the Oswestry area, and has a degree in Microbiology from the University College Wales Aberystwyth. After completing a PhD in 1992 he was appointed higher scientific officer at the newly formed Institute of Grassland and Environmental Research in Aberystwyth.
"Since joining IGER my career has focussed on ruminant nutrition and the role forages particularly silages have in improving animal performance, whilst reducing environmental pollution. During that time I have been involved in many research projects funded by industry, national government and the EU" said Dr. Davies.
He has been instrumental in developing linkages with commercial partners and has been involved in the development of one of the UK's best selling silage inoculants. Furthermore, he has presented silage research at numerous events both at a farmer level but also as an invited speaker at international conferences.
"My roots are firmly within the agricultural community and I believe passionately in fostering a strong linkage between research, farming practice and agricultural policy making.
"Now is the time with increasing pressures on land for both food and fuel production alongside the global increased demand for meat and milk products for UK agricultural to reap the rewards from existing and new scientific developments.
"However within this the onus is on both parties to ensure research is put into practice and my new role as agricultural outreach manager is to help facilitate this process" he added.
In his spare time David maintains his practical farming interest by jointly running a flock of sheep with wife Gillian and their three children on a 60 acre small holding at Pontrhydygroes and when not doing this he can often be found at farm auctions bidding on old farming implements to add to his collection.
