Soil Fertility
Methods of improving soil fertility will be explored at a Farming Connect Grassland Development Centre Event at the Institute of Grassland and Environmental Research (IGER), Plas Gogerddan near Aberystwyth at 2pm on Wednesday 27 June 2007.
The event will feature crops like lupins and red clover for fertility building highlighting some of the ongoing work at IGER as well as the more practical aspects of growing, managing and using these crops. There will be an opportunity to input information from your own farm into a purpose built model to predict the benefit of a range of different crops as fertility builders. "It is important that growing legumes like clovers or lupins is planned so that they fit into the farming system so farmers can take full advantage of all their benefits both to the soil and to livestock says Heather McCalman".
Results from the work done at IGER as part of HCC Woodchip for Livestock Bedding Project, will include the effects of applying composted woodchip to spring barley crops. IGERs Rhun Fychan says 'It's important that farmers consider how woodchip bedding is utilized afterwards as it needs thorough composting before applying to the soil. Our demonstration plots will give farmers an opportunity to assess the effect of different woodchip and straw composts on barley growth.'
Grassland Development Centre staff will be there to discuss issues relating to maintaining soil fertility, and staff from Organic Centre Wales available to respond to queries on the current organic situation as well staff from HCC Beef and Sheep Development programme.
