Extract from "Old Town Aberystwyth"
by D E Jenkins, Hon Sec May 1996
A Lifeboat Station under the control of the Harbour Master was set up in 1843 to combat the loss of life at sea but the lifeboat was neglected and became unserviceable so a branch of the RNLI was established at Aberystwyth in 1861.
The first lifeboat the EVELYN WOOD coat the sum of £170 and was placed on Station in November 1861, she remained on station until 1876, during this time she was launched on service 13 times saving 16 lives.
The first Lifeboat House was situated at Victoria Terrace on a site near where the present Glengower Hotel stands, it was built at a cost of £125 5s 6d. The builder was given an extra £5 to "remove the debris occupying the site" and had to complete the Boathouse in two months.
The early lifeboat carried a crew of 13 men and were propelled by 10 oars and sail. A very large number of people were required to launch and to recover the lifeboats during a service call or on an exercise.
The lifeboat, on its carriage, was launched straight off the beach in the early days, this gives a great many problems, as the consistency of the beach surface kept on changing, so a launching slipway had to be built on the main promenade. The present landing jetty on the promenade has been built on the site of the old slipway.
New Lifeboat Station
A new Lifeboat House was built in Queens Road in 1885 to accommodate the improved design of larger lifeboats, in later years used as a BBC Radio Station.
Pulling and sailing lifeboats continued to provide a service at Aberystwyth until November 1932 when the last pulling and sailing lifeboat the JOHN & NAOMI BEATTIE WAS replaced after26 years' service on station by the first motor lifeboat the FREDERICK ANGUS. The JOHN & NAOMI BEATTIE has been fully restored by the Swansea Industrial and Maritime Museum and is on permanent display.
