The sea should always be treated with respect, even by good swimmers. If you follow these basic rules, you'll be able to enjoy it in safety.
Whenever possible, swim in zones marked by red-and-yellow flags. These indicate that lifeguards are on patrol.
Do not swim immediately after meals.
Never swim in secluded spots where there is no one on the beach.
Do not stay in the water when you are feeling cold and numb. Come out immediately to avoid cramp.
Take heed of warning signs, and do not bathe when the red flag is flying.
Never assume that calm waters mean safe bathing. Always select a suitable landmark on the beach and make sure that cross-currents do not carry you from that point.
Do not get excited if caught in an undertow or current. And never struggle if seized by cramp. When in trouble of this kind, raise your arm vertically as a signal for help and adopt a floating position until help arrives. If suffering an attack of cramp, try to keep the affected part still.
Do not interfere when a rescue is being performed by qualified lifeguard, unless asked to do so by someone in authority.
The Mid Wales coast from Borth northwards to the 3 miles long strand at Harlech has some of the finest surf in the region, parrticularly when a stiff west to south-west wind has piled up the Western Approaches. These great walls of water should be tackled when the worst of the wind is over and the great foam heads are beginning to space themselves out with long platforms of water in between. The great advantages of the Mid Wales beaches to the surfer is their extreme length. North Cornwall, South Pembrokeshire; these are coasts with a bigger constant swell, but few coasts have room as Mid Wales has. This does not signal complete abandon, and when there is a chequered flag flying - and when there is not - complete lane discipline and care with escaping boards should be maintained.
