Group Look At Future Health Services In West Wales
Ceredigion & Mid Wales NHS Trust
A group set up to consider the future development of health services in West Wales will be led by Dr Bruce Ferguson, Medical Director of Bro Morgannwg NHS Trust.
The Planning Forum will include representatives from the Trusts, Local Health Boards and Community Health Councils and will oversee work to develop closer links between the hospitals in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire.
The Health Minister Dr Brian Gibbons announced that a group would be set up to following the review of acute services in the region in response to Designed for Life.
Bernardine Rees, who is Chief Executive of Pembrokeshire LHB and the Project Director for the Planning Forum, said: "Everyone agrees that the health service needs to change. The Planning Forum, which will include health professionals and patient representatives, will look at how the four hospitals serving the region can work together more closely and how community services can be developed to respond more effectively to people's needs.
"Dr Ferguson, who will lead the Forum, is well respected among health professionals and has a wealth of experience in clinical leadership, developing service networks and delivering service changes that will ensure quality and safety of patient services. This experience will be of significant value to the group and facilitating change in the three counties.
"Dr Ferguson is aware of the health needs of the region as he was a member of the team that reviewed acute services. However, because he is not based in the three counties he will be able to remain impartial and focus the group on considering what is best for improving patient care."
The approach that the Planning Forum will take to its work is currently being discussed with the Community Health Councils and clinical staff. The Planning Forum is expected to meet for the first time towards the end of February.
Dr Ferguson said "I am convinced that the eventual solution to networking services must come from the clinicians themselves, and this process is designed to ensure engagement at all levels. I welcome the opportunity to work with clinical colleagues in the three counties".
