Ceredigion Coastline & Dolphins
So what's special about Cardigan Bay?
Whatever you get up to in Cardigan Bay, whether at work or enjoying time off, you will experience the beauty and quality of the marine and coastal environment. The area supports Bottlenose dolphins, Atlantic Grey seals, strange ancient fish species and internationally important habitats - just a few of the special features of the Bay. Read on to find out more about just one of them!
Cardigan Bay is one of only two areas in the UK where Bottlenose dolphins are known to occur in significant numbers. Below are some interesting facts all about them.
- Description: A large grey dolphin, males reaching up to 3.7m long, with a short stubby beak and dark backward-curving dorsal fin. Young dolphins are lighter skinned than adults.
- Behaviour: Often lively, playful animals that leap from the water, slap their flukes (tail) on the water and bow-ride boats.
- Diet: Varies but includes fish, crabs, and squid. Reproduction: Females only produce one calf every 2-6 years and they are born throughout the spring and summer.
- Local numbers: The latest estimates suggest that 130 dolphins occur in the area throughout the year, while a greater number have been seen in the late summer months.
- Conservation importance: We still have a lot to learn about the local dolphins and their habits, but we know they feed, raise their young, and socialise here: all essential activities that highlight the area's importance for the species and the need to ensure that they are conserved for the enjoyment of future generations.
Where's the best place to see marine wildlife from?
- The coastal path: Bottlenose dolphins, harbour porpoise, Atlantic grey seals and the area's abundant bird life can all be seen close to the shore. Sometimes you will even see dolphins only meters away from popular beaches. The coastal paths of Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire follow the dramatic cliff tops and offer some great sites to spot for marine wildlife - enjoy a walk and see what you can see!
- Specialised boat trips: A number of professional skippers run educational trips in the Bay and will tell you all about the wildlife of the area. If you want to see marine wildlife from the sea we recommend that you take one of these trips rather than use your own boat. For more information about boat trips contact the local Tourist Information Centres.
What's being done to look after the Bay's marine environment?
In recognition of the importance of these valuable natural assets, parts of the Bay have been selected as a candidate Special Areas of Conservation (cSAC) - a European designation that will help to ensure that the area and its wildlife are safeguarded for the benefit and enjoyment of future generations.
