Aberystwyth Architectural Walk
Aberystwyth still retains evidence of its medieval castle and town walls, dating from 1277; this foundation was preceded by an earlier castle on a different site, by a Celtic Christian clas at Llanbadarn Fawr and by prehistoric settlement, which had included the neighbouring hillfort of Pen Dinas, originating ca. 400 BC, and from the summit of which a mid-19th-century memorial column to the Duke of Wellington now rises.

Aberystwyth Cardigan Bay
River Rheidol forms the harbour at Aberystwyth that is joined by the river Ystwyth a few metres before reaching the Irish Sea.
Between the harbour and Constitution Hill the promenade stretches for about a mile, along which are situated Castle remains the Old University College and the Royal Pier, also many hotels B&B's and private houses.
Aberystwyth was once called the Brighton of Wales and this gives an idea of the character of the architecture as you walk along the sea front.

Aberystwyth is the main town and holiday resort of Cardigan Bay situated in the county of Ceredigion (formally Dyfed) midway between North and South Wales its central location and the healthy combination of sea and mountainous air make it an ideal base for exploring the whole of Wales.
University of Wales Aberystwyth
Aberystwyth is a University Town situated almost in the centre of Cardigan Bay, and from the top of Constitution Hill you can see as far North as the Lleyn Peninsular in Caernarvonshire, looking South Strumble Head may be seen in Pembrokeshire, inland is the mountainous region know as Plynlimon.
Aberystwyth Harbour
Aberystwyth has been noted in recent years as the sunniest spot in the British Isles and with a favourable winter climate. The average temperature of the sea surface off 51 degrees and the temperature of the water not usually rising above 57 degrees in August, winter 46 degrees.
During the short days of winter Aberystwyth hour of sunset is later than that of London with an extra 20 minutes of evening light.
Aberystwyth Prehistoric settlers
Prehistoric settlers built a hillfort called Pen Dinas (one of the largest hillforts in Wales) and the earthworks are still visible today, upon Pen Dinas is a monument in the shape of a up turned cannon to commemorate a local land owner who was on the field as an officer in the battle of Waterloo. Back in the sixth century a British saint called Padarn formed a great mission station and by the twelfth century the town grew further by the building of a Norman Castle to the south of the present town. Towards the end of the thirteenth century King Edward I built a masonry castle and the remains can still be seen today.
Shipbuilding and lead mining in and around Aberystwyth grew and soon became the source of prosperity, before the start of the eighteenth century Aberystwyth had become more important than Cardiff for shipping. But the coming of the railway and stiff competition from foreign mining companies, destroyed the shipbuilding and mining in the area.
