The Railway was original built as a private company under an Act of Parliament known as Rheidol Light Ralway Act 1897
Contractors Messrs. Pethwick Bros. of Plymouth
Building commenced in 1901
Completed 1902
Freight traffic ran in August and passenger service later the same year
The Railway first ran from the Quayside in Aberystwyth Harbour through the Rheidol Valley to Devils Bridge
The Vale of Rheidol line is 1ft. 11½ in. single gauge line
Original constructed to transport ore between several lead mines
The ore was taken to the Harbour Station of Aberystwyth for shipment to ports on the Continent, chiefly Antwerp
During the First World War thousands of tones of timer were also transported from the forests of the Rheidol Valley to the coal mines of South Wales
The Company's first locomotives were named "Edward VII" and "Prince of Wales" constructed by Messers. Davies & Metcalfe of Manchester
Another locomotive the "Rheidol" used by contractors was also brought
In addittion to the locomotives, twelve passenger coaches, three brake vans, twenty four box wagons, five timber trucks and two cattle wagons were also purchased
Line taken over by the Cambrian Railways on 1st August 1913
on the 1st of January 1923 the Great Western Railway take control
The Great western Railway re-built "Prince of Wales" and constructed two new engines, built at Swindon
1937 saw twelve new coaches brought into service
It is today open for passenger transport only, between Easter and October. It is very popular with visitors to Aberystwyth who find it one of the most enjoyable rail rides in the whole of Britain.
